You-Do-You Hazy IPA
This is our fourth official N/A beer under the You-Do-You series (fifth if you count that 1% amber ale from back in December of 2022).
Jen and Mike had their sights set on non-alcoholic beer from the beginning of their vision for 2FB, but it took a little bit of time to get the gears in motion. Mike started experimenting with “little” beers and hop water in late 2022.
In January of 2023, we launched our Dry January beverage program, which was a resounding success. So far in the series we have had a Tangerine Sour, Porter, West Coast IPA and now the Hazy, with more to come!
Since the first two beers, Mike has been able to change methods for the way that he has brewed these beers. Now using a special strain of maltose-negative yeast, meaning it does not ferment most of the sugars in wort. Using this yeast, we are able to brew the beer very similarly to how we would any normal beer, so as to not sacrifice flavor, texture, mouthfeel, etc.
Hazy or “New England” IPA’s originated in Vermont in the late 2000’s. John Kimmich (protege of Greg Noonan) of The Alchemist Brewery is widely considered the inventor of NEIPA’s, the first being “Heady Topper”.
What makes NEIPA different from West Coast, or English style IPA’s is the yeast used, and the way that hops are used in the brewing process. Adding more hops overall, and after the boil, makes the beer visually hazier, usually fruity, citrusy, way less bitter, and overall more palatable than previous American iterations of the IPA style.
This style has gained major popularity since about 2018, or so, since it’s introduction to the mass market. It has spread from New England and beyond, with every region getting their chance to put a spin on the style. It has become a standard in craft breweries, as ubiquitous as any pale ale or pilsner.
Our YDY- Hazy is a full-bodied IPA with tropical flavors of mango and guava. Citra, Mosaic, and Galaxy blend together to give a pleasant hop profile.
